In a game that could’ve gone either way until the last few seconds, the varsity girls basketball team lost to the Stony Point Tigers 35-41 on Tuesday, Jan. 16. Going into the fourth quarter down by two, the varsity team put everything they had on the court to try to turn the game around.
“All of our players played hard,” Junior Juliette Cronin said. “At the end, we just couldn’t execute our passes and missed some key shots.”
Stony Point started strong, throwing the Mavs off their game. While the Lady Mavs were able to go into the paint for layups, their shot attempts were continuously blocked by the Stony Point Tigers.
“They came out playing a lot stronger than the first time we played them. I think we could’ve executed some plays better, but overall we took good shots,” Cronin said.
The second half started with the Lady Mavs in the lead by four. Using the momentum gained from winning the first half, the Lady Mavs came out strong, scoring the first points of the third quarter. The lead didn’t last, as the Lady Tigers came back to end the quarter 32-34.
“We started off strong in the second half. We only scored five points in the third quarter, but we got a lot of steals and played good defense. Offensively and defensively though, we were mismatched in the paint,” Cronin said.
In the last minute of the fourth quarter, the score was 35-38 with the Lady Mavs being in reach to tie the game. The varsity team got in possession of the ball with 40 seconds left after stealing it from the Lady Tigers. Unable to seal the win with a three and ending the game with Stony Point getting free throws, the Varsity Women’s team lost 35-41.
“I think our next game against Cedar Ridge will go even better with the path we’re on right now. I’m excited to see how the team shapes up for these last six games,” Cronin said.
The Lady Mavs will play Cedar Ridge this Friday, Jan. 19, at home, for a second chance to beat the Lady Raiders.
