On Tuesday, Feb. 25 varsity softball went against Vandegrift on their home field. The Lady Mavs were able to secure the win against the Vipers with a score of 21-15.
“Offensively, we did really well against Vandergrift, ” junior first base Audrey Melnar said. “We scored a lot of runs, got a lot of people on base, and brought people in. A big part of our win was due to our positive attitudes even after coming off of a district loss against Cedar Ridge.”
The Lady Mavs started off the first inning with three to the Vipers five runs. Similarly, In the second inning the Vipers outscored the Lady Mavs 2-1. The Lady Mavs battled back though, scoring 8 runs in the third inning and locking down in feilding, keeping the Vipers from scoring a single run in the third.
“Even with our good offense, a key component that we can definitely improve is parts of our defense, like our communication on the field and having a faster reaction time,” Melnar said.
The Lady Mavs had a stagnant fourth and fifth innings, scoring zero in both, allowing the Vipers to take the lead 13-12, scoring three runs in both innings. The Lady Mavs bounced back though, once again scoring eight runs to Vandergrifts 0 in the sixth. Ultimately the score ended 21-15, with 17 of the Lady Mavs runs coming from RBI’s.
The Lady Mavs will play again on Tuesday, Mar. 11 against the Round Rock Dragons, at home.
