In the library, senior Catherine Podmore builds and creates at the tower Makerspace.

By now, you’ve probably heard of the new addition in the library, and they’re called Makerspaces. These Makerspaces are interactive stations placed around the left side of the library, which allow students to engage in activities such as stacking legos to make a tower, a coloring station and more. These stations give the students the opportunity to create, craft and tinker all they want.

“The Makerspaces help students explore and stay engaged,” Librarian Laura Falli said. “We have different stations for subjects like English, science, social studies, and even art.”

The multiple Makerspaces help students with each subject, so some even come in during lunch to work and play.

“I love it,” senior Serina Rock said. “I wish they had them earlier since I’m a senior.”

These Makerspaces were set in motion after the clearing out of more than 6,000 library books that had not been used in at least five years. This drastic donation to other libraries opened up a large space that needed to be filled, and librarians Amelia Lewis and Falli had a big plan.

“The best part about the Makerspaces is that there is no right or wrong way to use them,” Instructional Technology Specialist Krista Tyler said. “The only constraints to a Makerspace are the constraints we put on our ideas.”

In addition to these new areas, Falli and Lewis have created a Lego wall on one of the brick pillars that populate the library. Students are allowed to add onto this masterpiece, with a goal of building up to the ceiling.

“It’s nice that when you don’t have homework, you can come and interact with the different stations,” senior Meira Becirovic said. “It gives you something to do and create.”
