As the school year starts to unfold, students aren’t the only ones setting goals for the rest of the year. Teachers have their fair share of thinking about questions such as, “What do I need to accomplish by the end of the year?” However, for teachers, goals mainly include the growth and welfare of their students.

“I’m trying to incorporate the new laptops since all the sophomores have them this year,” English teacher Grace Edsel said. “I’m also new to teaching Pre-AP. The difference between Pre-AP and on-level has to do with the content. Pre-AP is more about getting prepared for college.”

Teachers also have to be ready to flow into the regular motions of the school year.

“I’m ready because I like being a teacher,” World History teacher Karol Giblin said. “I like the normalcy of having a schedule but it still takes a couple weeks — like the students — to adjust.”

Also similar to students, teachers feel the relaxed nature of the summer doesn’t transition well with sleeping schedules of the school year.

“It’s easier to adjust back into curriculum,” Edsel said. “I have more trouble with waking up early every day. I try to make sure I don’t look too disheveled in class.”

Although teachers are still adjusting back into the school schedule, teachers also take time to think of new ideas and curriculum to teach for the year in order to keep things fresh. One school year is never exactly the same as the next.

“I always try to do something new every year,” engineering teacher Walter Lee said. “For example, I am allowing students to use journals with their notes on their quizzes but the questions will be harder. I also want to make the tests more like the SAT to prepare my students.”
