Students can gather in the library to get help from teachers on core subjects.

Library Late Nights are back, but on a larger scale: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. These opportunities offer help in core subjects (English, math, science or social studies).

“Anybody who comes to the Library Late Night tutorials needs to be ready to work and not hang out,” Librarian Amelia Bligh said. “Teachers won’t be able to work with students if it’s loud.”

The goal of Library Late Night is not only to provide extra help, but also to give students a peaceful place to study if need be.

Teachers are assigned to certain subjects to help students in that area if they need the extra push. Along with teachers will be NHS members, who are students looking to assist their peers for community service hours.

Library Late Night came to be from a grant that the school received several years ago. The administrators decided to use the money to start an after-school night where kids could stay late for tutoring. They took a look at failure rates, TAKS and STAAR/EOC scores, attendance rates, and retention rates when they discussed the need for Library Late Night.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the library stays open for late nights until 6:15 p.m., and on Wednesdays it is open until 5:15 p.m.. Late buses have been added to Tuesdays and Thursdays, instead of only Wednesdays in order to make things convenient for students if they do not have a ride home. Late buses leave at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
