Mavericks lend helping hand to devastated Texas coast
As Mavericks worried about their friends and families in the affected areas after Hurricane Harvey slammed into Rockport Aug. 25 and stalled out over the Houston area, they wanted to help in the recovery efforts.
“We as Mavericks have supportive people to help donate,” Completion Specialist Atonya Talley said.
Campus officials chose the Austin Disaster Relief Network to pass along donated items such as cleanup supplies, leather work gloves, hand sanitizer, box fans, clothing and personal toiletries.
“I have donated clothes and shoes to those who lost it all to this tragic disaster,” sophomore Melanie Porter said.
All along the coast from Corpus Christi to Orange, Texas residents are digging out of the mud and picking up the pieces of their lives.
“It’s sad; my heart goes out to the people of Houston,” senior Kemaya Washington said. “I have already donated but I wish I could do more.”
