Halloween Must-See Movies
Although this oldie may not have the blood and gore or the graphic effects of horror movies of today, it is still capable of giving you the chills. The story of a woman who spends a night in a motel and is met with the (unpleasant) surprise of her life, this movie features intense suspense that is sure to keep you wide-eyed and wary, as well as shocking plot twists and yes, the famous shower murder scene.2) Best Documentary-Style: The Blair Witch Project
The Blair Witch Project is the movie that kicked off the whole genre of scary movies filmed and marketed like true documentaries, including the famous Paranormal Activity series. It is a “product” of a film project of three college students who disappeared while exploring the Blair Witch legend, leaving only their footage behind. Set in a creepy forest and complete with disembowelments, ghostly hauntings and witch culture galore, this movie is absolutely petrifying.
3) Best Psychological: The Uninvited
Following her mother’s traumatizing death, Anna returns home from a stay in a mental institution, only to have to deal with her oblivious father and his cruel girlfriend, Rachel. As Rachel becomes increasingly threatening, Anna struggles to escape from this nightmare; however, things are not what they seem. Just the right blend of bloody and suspenseful, this psychological thriller will play mind games that will leave you seriously disturbed, and intrigued.
4) Best Supernatural: Insidious
We’ve all seen scary movies involving the supernatural world before, but none pull it off quite as well as this one does. Shortly after moving into a new house, a little boy falls into an unexplainable coma. Soon, the other members of the family become plagued by paranormal episodes, and learn that they must fight the demons in their house, as well as in their past, to save their son. Frightening while somehow escaping the realm of cliche, this movie is sure to terrify.
5) Best Abduction: The Fourth Kind
Abigail Tyler is a doctor researching amnesia patients, and after using hypnosis as treatment, her patients begin to have violent breakdowns, upset to the point of hysteria but refusing to recount what they remember. Believing that this links to the mysterious death of her husband, she continues to push on with her research. However, when paranormal events occur and she she starts to become victim to the forces torturing her patients as well, complications ensue. Say what you will about abduction movies being cheesy, but The Fourth Kind will leave you feeling unsafe in your bed at night.
