‘Thor: The Dark World’ Lights Up Theaters

The most recent movie in the Avengers story, Thor: The Dark World, was recently released, and I thought it was a reasonably good movie. Although some of the details seemed unoriginal, the storyline and combination of comedy, action, and drama were commendable aspects found in the movie.

Even though the effects and music of the movie were fine, they seemed way too similar to those of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The sparkling image of Asgard looked like Gondor in slightly different colors, and the music seemed like a wannabe LOTR soundtrack. Though I must compliment the makeup team for their work on Christopher Eccleston, who played the ruler of the dark elves. The fact that I could go through the whole movie without recognizing an actor I watched in many episodes of Doctor Who is proof that the costume and effects teams did their jobs well. Even though they weren’t horrible, I think the effects and music could have been much more appealing with a little more originality.

Once you get over the unoriginal details, you can’t deny that the movie has a great story. Thor must stop the enemies, the dark elves, from using a great power called the aether to send the universe into darkness. Because Jane, Thor’s human love interest, is a scientist, the way they are reunited actually makes sense and there are no “movie miracles” because most of our questions can be answered by the science discovered in the movie. Thor, working with his tricky brother Loki, adds suspense and suspicion throughout the movie that keeps viewers on their toes. The movie shows planning for action and true relationships, giving the movie a realistic feeling which is refreshing to see in a fiction tale.

The proportion of comedy, action and drama in the movie was appropriate. Comedy was found in Loki and Thor’s relationship as well as in the characters of Jane’s scientific team, especially Darcy. Loki’s banter with Thor was hilarious and Darcy’s comments and reactions to Jane’s situation were often used to lighten the mood. Necessary drama was present in the relationship of Thor and Loki with complicated trust issues, as well as in Thor and Jane’s extremely long distance relationship. Action, as expected, was the main element and I thought the writers placed the action scenes appropriately throughout the film.

Thor: The Dark World was, overall, a well-rounded movie to add to the Avengers story. I enjoyed the story and heroism of Thor as well as the theme of trust seen throughout the movie. The comedy and relationships placed in this Marvel movie were very appealing and I would recommend this movie to any fans of science-fiction or action films.
