The Year of the Snake had its turn, now make way for the Year of the Horse. On Jan 31, the two zodiacs made their switch and the year kicked off to a new start. It may already be 2014 for some, but that does not mean we should all be party-poopers and avoid the celebration. (For those having trouble, this could be your second chance on that New Year’s Resolution.) Performances and festivals will be hosted by Austin organizations. Go out and experience a new culture while having fun at the same time.

Year of the Horse Celebration – ($18 members, $20 non-members)

This event includes a lion dance, vocal and instrumental performances, a costume exhibition, a game of bingo (with prizes), and refreshments.

Chinatown New Year Celebration- (Free admission)

Details: Sunday, Feb. 9, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Location: Chinatown Center; 10901 N. Lamar Blvd

Chinatown’s annual new year blowout is a huge event.This celebration is packed with activities and performances all day. Dances include shows by Austin Dance India, Hawaiian Kona Island, The Love of China, and various lion and dragon dancers. Martial arts, drummers, and a fireworks display will also be in the list of events. Oh, this is not to mention the bungee trampoline, rock wall, and mechanical bull. Local vendors and artisans will also be featured there.

In February, make sure to go out and experience the diverse culture of Austin. In the Asian culture, New Years is a major holiday where family and friends gather together to start of the new year together. Likewise, in Austin these events are perfect for connecting with your fellow community.
