‘God’s Not Dead’: Faith-Inspiring Story Hits Theaters
The question of God, real or not real, how God plays out in people’s lives, etc. has become a burning question in recent years. In God’s Not Dead, Harold Cronk gives his answer to one big question about God, is he dead or alive, but, the movie is also about how far people will go to defend what they believe.
In the movie, Josh Wheaton is defending the position that God is not dead, contrary to Professor Radisson who believes God is dead. Wheaton is the only one in the class willing to stand up to the teacher, which leaves the class as the jury. The jury will decide if God is dead or alive based on 20-minute increments Wheaton presents to the class with evidence from scientists, other professors and the Bible. His story is one of having courage and faith in God’s plan.
But, Josh isn’t the only one with courage; several characters are pushed to make decisions about God and if they are willing to stand up for God. Ayisha, a student at the university, but not in Josh’s class, is a Muslim with a strict father on keeping their religion rules. We watch her put on and take off her hijab, a headscarf, to make her father happy and be accepted at the university. Will she continue to hide how she is unhappy with the Muslim faith and rules, or will she stand up to her father?
While Ayisha is a Muslim, another student, Martin, is an atheist. Although, he’s only an atheist to agree with Professor Radisson and make another strict father happy, but this time to follow education’s rules. Martin listens to Josh’s presentations and truly begins to question why he believes what he believes.
Each of the characters in the movie are challenged to re-evaluate their beliefs. The movie does an excellent job of following many storylines and including a variety of religions. Each story is fully explained and connected to another in some way. And the big question, is God dead or alive, is answered for each one of them. But, the movie also inspires the viewers to question their beliefs, whether God is alive or dead and then the challenge to spread the message. The movie proves God’s not dead, so will you tell everyone or keep it locked inside?
