‘Neighbors’ Good For Laughs

Neighbors, the fraternity flick featuring stars Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Dave Franco, proved to be an amusing and comedic, albeit predictable, movie.

The opening few scenes outlines the dull, suburban lives of new parentsMac and Kelly Radner (Rogen and Rose Byrnes), who are struggling to adjust their lively, party-loving personalities with their new roles as parents. When a fraternity moves into the house next door to theirs, they are simultaneously worried about the crazy antics of college students and excited by the change. The first night, the Radners succumb to the fun promised by the wild, pulsing party of their neighbors and bond with the frat’s president and vice president, Teddy (Efron) and Pete (Franco). As the partying continues throughout the nights of the week, however, Mac and Kelly are brought crashing back down to reality by their fussy, sleepless baby and file a noise complaint with the cops. When Teddy finds out, hostility quickly ensues.

The rest of the movie focuses on the escalating pranks between the Radners and the frat, which soon turns into an all-out war. This stretch occupied most of the screen time and featured some hilarious shenanigans. There were many moments where I literally laughed out loud as I watched the Radners, supposedly “responsible” adults with jobs, a house and a child, become so consumed by the frustration and excitement of battling with the frat.

Admittedly, the movie lacked any real substance. The pranks carried most of the storyline and the ending was predictable and unoriginal. This is, however, a foreseeable characteristic of the film; I doubt anyone is walking into Neighbors hoping for a deep and life-altering movie. It also features some graphic scenes and crude humor, but that is only to be expected from a rated R comedy.

Overall for what it is – a lighthearted, humorous film meant to bring out the laughs – Neighbors is entertaining and fun. If nothing else, Efron and Franco provide a great view for the duration of the movie. If you’re looking for something to lighten your mood, I would say it is well worth a watch.
