For the people that don’t want to go out this Halloween and would rather relax in the comfort of their home, here are five movies worth watching this spooky season.
The Shining
A family of three becomes the caretakers of an isolated hotel where the son Danny starts to see horrific visions of the hotel’s past with a gift called “The Shining.” The father Jack slowly slips into insanity as a result of cabin fever and the hotel’s ghosts haunting him. Jack goes completely insane after being convinced to “correct” his family by one of the ghosts. Danny must use his psychic abilities to save himself and his mother from the demons that possessed his father.
Hereditary
After experiencing the loss of a loved one, the four members of a family all turn to different means to grieve. During this time, disturbing spiritual manifestations start to haunt their house and the stress of this becomes evident in the children. They each begin to have disturbing, otherworldly experiences linked to the sinister secrets and emotional trauma that have been passed through generations of their family.
Oculus
Kaylie Russell tries to exonerate her brother, Tim Russell, years after he was convicted of the murder of their parents. Kaylie, not being able to let go of the past, wants to prove that the source of their childhood tragedy was a mysterious mirror with a dark past. She convinces Tim to study the mirror with her before destroying it.
Get Out
Chris and Rose travel to visit Rose’s parents upstate for the weekend. Chris takes the family’s awkwardness as their miserable attempts to deal with the fact that Rose is in an interracial relationship. Little by little disturbing truths are revealed about the family. What was initially passed off as racial difference starts to appear more and more sinister as the weekend progresses. Not being able to take it anymore, Chris makes the decision to get out.
Coraline
A stop-motion animated film following a young girl named Coraline who discovers a secret door in her new home leading to a parallel reality. At first glance this new reality seems much better than her own, but things quickly turn dangerous. Coraline must escape her new “parents” and get back home before she’s trapped forever.
