1st Day Highlights Range of Emotions
Lost. Confused. Excited. Giddy. Nervous. Anxious. Skeptical. Bored.
These were the emotions that ran through the heads of students on the first day of school. Will they have good teachers? Can they tolerate the workload? What are they expecting?
The first day of school is not everybodys’ forte. People get lost, there are schedule mess ups, and students may not like their class, but what’s a first day of school without reunions and minor inconvenience?
“This year I really like the teachers. They seem to be funny and try to get to know you,” junior Cameron Barufaldi said. “You get the impression that maybe this year may be a little fun.”
Teachers are just as scared of new students as students are for new teachers. There can be a little ‘air of awkwardness’ surrounding the first day which may make a few students a little uncomfortable. There are some teachers who give off an aura of a relaxed classroom while others might scare them off.
Like birthdays, the first day of school’s arrival doesn’t hit until later. The impact of another year starting is a faze … until students get the homework.
“Time went by fast,” junior Shruti Rajagopal said. “I’m in eleventh grade, but it doesn’t feel like that yet. The whole day feels like it’s a dream, vivid and fuzzy.”
Returning students know what to expect. They can locate their classes, find the right person for a job, and even help out if necessary. For the freshmen, not so much. High school can be a little intimidating, but it can be viewed as the ice-breaker.
“I don’t know what to expect this year,” freshman Kayla Lincoln said. “Some people say it’s nice, but then again there are movie stereotypes to watch out for.”
The first day was all about meeting the teachers and deciding whether students liked the class.
“It’s hard to think that this is my last high school first day of school. There will be those in college, but the place you spent your days growing up … it’s hard to forget that,” senior Hannah Parker said.
