Library Hosts Event for Writers
Writing. Usually when students hear the word they cringe under its effect, automatically referring to English essays or history prompts. Words like “analyze,” “compare” and “explain” fly through their heads and within a millisecond they disregard anything related to writing.
But the problem is they often forget that there is more than just academic writing in existence. There is the fun, creative and random writing that’s filled with imagination and direction. There is no analyzing, comparing or explaining, but words that flow out with no purpose.
“We know that academic writing usually drains students to such an extent that they disregard any other style.” Librarian Amelia Bligh said. “This event is to expose them to other styles of writing that doesn’t involve overthinking but still remains fun.”
On Nov. 18, the library is hosting an “I Love to Write” day to promote fun writing. During all lunches, students are welcome to come to the library and write for fun. They will be recreating the beat coffee house look to accompany the atmosphere for writing with dimmed lights, added music and offering tea or coffee to any attending students.
The librarians are also encouraging teachers to bring their classes to participate in this fun activity.
On this day students will come in and be given a random prompt that they have to write about. They will be timed and within the time span they write down whatever they want about the prompt. Once time is up, students move onto the next prompt or drink coffee and support those who will be continuing.
There will also be prompts for the Read It Forward book Wonder.
“The whole purpose of this event is to show students that there are multiple styles of writing and to not get discouraged if one isn’t working out,” Bligh said. “It shows that writing can be academic and fun.”
The “I Love to Write” day is a part of the new program, in which the library interacts with students for a variety of different things. Some that are familiar are Talk Like A Pirate, Auggie’s Birthday, Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket Hunt and the mustache day.
