Lady Mavs Take on Westwood

On March 8, the girls’ varsity soccer team played a match against Westwood. Although McNeil lost 0-2, the Lady Mavs played remarkably well.

“We definitely improved our defense,” junior Saffana Velji said. “There was a period of 20 minutes where we held the Westwood team on their half of the field.”

The team prevented a number of shots from Westwood and even had attempts to shoot goals. The Lady Mavs goalie, junior Kari Kiefer, blocked several potential goals in an admirable manner.

“It was a better game than before,” Velji said. “We did not let our defense break easily.”

The team cooperated in order to prevent the ball from staying on the home grounds. However, when the ball did go past the line, the girls blocked several corner kicks.

“Our goal was to connect and communicate,” Velji said. “It wasn’t just winning or standing out individually.”
