Rockin’ Recycling

Green Club distributes recycling bins to help teachers, students properly dispose of trash

Noticing that the school was having some trouble properly recycling, Green Club stepped up to the plate. On April 5, Tara Hedlund, one of the sponsors of the club, sent out an email explaining to all staff about the green recycling bins that would start appearing.

“The fact that things aren’t being recycled, and instead being thrown away, is due to the miseducation about what can and can’t be recycled,” Hedlund said. “Green Club has decided to tackle the situation by educating the students and staff about proper recycling and taking over the collection process.”

Green Club is a group of green-minded students who care about the environment. The group hopes to eventually tackle topics such as clean energy, composting, gardening, wildlife protection, clean water, and other environmental issues. After finding out that most recyclable things were being thrown away instead, they felt the need to fix that major problem.

We had a few district coalition meetings and found out that recycling is not being correctly handled at most of the other high schools either,” Hedlund said. “So we decided to fight for this issue at each of our schools to see what progress we can make and assess if this issue needs to be taken to the school board.”

The Green Club’s recycling campaign began on April 24. The members of Green Club and any other interested clubs collect the recycling from the classrooms and workrooms, which they plan to continue once a week for the rest of the school year.
