On Aug. 23, 2020, a video was released on the internet of a 29-year-old African American man, Jacob Blake, being shot and assaulted several times by Wisconsin police. This happened while Jacob Blake was simply opening the car of a parked vehicle. The video shows Blake walking away from officers who were aiming at him with their weapons. He approached an SUV and    opened the driver’s side door when an officer grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and then shot him in the back at least seven times. He is now being hospitalized  and is in very serious condition, paralyzed from the waist down.

Attorney Benjamin Crump, Blake’s family attorney, says that three of Blake’s children, ages 3, 5 and 8, were inside the SUV when their father was assaulted by police. There were heated standoffs just outside of the county courthouse between police and protestors the Monday after the city’s curfew came into effect. “We cannot allow the cycle of systematic racism and injustice to continue… We also cannot continue going down this path of damage and destruction,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said.
