Speech and Debate Dominates

The Speech and Debate team will finish their competitive season this weekend, Feb. 18 to Feb. 21, at the California Invitational in Berkeley, CA. This event is the beginning of the postseason where qualifying debaters will attend the Texas Forensic Association (TFA) state tournament, Tournament of Champions and multiple district tournaments. Debating at these events will allow students to qualify for the UIL state tournament and the national championship. The team has had 15 students qualify for TFA state championships. Senior Anshul Gulati has qualified for the Tournament of Champions.

Six students from McNeil were awarded scholarships and they collaborated with other students within the city of Austin to complete their buildings. “I was surprised that I didn’t get a scholarship of lower value just because I didn’t get one the year before because I forgot to apply,” senior Katarina Peña said. “So when I found out I got as much money as I did, I was pretty excited. My parents really wanted me to get a scholarship too because I’m going to school out of state, so I was on cloud nine.”
