AVID I took a field trip to the University of Mary-Hardin Baylor on Oct. 3. The freshmen toured the school to plan for the future and evaluate their college options.
“Mary-Hardin Baylor… [was] small, but they were very nice,” Elian Moreno said. “There were not too many students, it was relaxing. I would say that I see myself attending.”
Students were impressed by the private Baptist university, but students’ interests and judgments went past the size of the school.
“My favorite part was the cafeteria,” Sydne Jackson said. “They have a buffet, and I really like the fact that they have foods from different ethnicities- it’s not just one culture, it’s multiple different cultures. I expected the school to be very strict because typically Christian schools are. So my first impression wasn’t very good, but the more that I went on the tour, the more that I saw that this school wasn’t very different at all.”
Mary-Hardin Baylor’s strongest major is nursing. This was significant to those who were drawn to the academics of the school.
“For me, I want to go into nursing,” Halynd Golden said. “Their big nursing building is like a full-blown hospital, and it’s super cool to see that we get our very own space. There just seems to be so many opportunities.”
On Oct. 4, AVID II sophomores will join AVID I in the MHB experience. For more information about Mary-Hardin Baylor, visit https://www.umhb.edu/.
