Last weekend nineteen members of the McNeil Model UN attended a conference at RICE University in Houston.
“I saw a lot of growth just over this weekend,” Austin Crane, one of two Model UN sponsors said. “A lot of students who struggled with certain things overcame those over the course of the weekend. Maybe not fully, but definitely made strides of improvement.”
The conference was broken up across three days, with committee sessions on all three days as well as opening ceremonies on Friday and closing ceremonies on Sunday.
“I think I really learned how to speak more and talk more,” Vedant Singh, a delegate in the Harry Potter committee, said. “And discuss with my peers better on how to solve problems together. I think MUN is really helpful in coming together and solving problems.”
The students left with teachers Todd Carpenter, Austin Crane and Lauren Griffith on Friday morning, and returned Sunday afternoon with eleven awards. The students were awarded ten individual awards and McNeil as a whole won the Outstanding Small Delegation award.
“One of [the highlights of my weekend] was definitely right after the award ceremony, or in the award ceremony, looking at all the awards we got,” Crane said. “And also watching Mr. Carpenter jump up and down when we got outstanding small delegation. That first jump, it was like three feet in the air.”
