World Deaf Day falls on Sunday, Sept. 29 this year. World Deaf Day is a day made to celebrate and recognize the rich cultural heritage of the deaf community. The deaf community is rich in culture and tradition and known to be a tight knit community. World Deaf Day is often celebrated in the community in the form of rallies, seminars and fun deaf centered events including farmers markets, deaf movie nights and deaf artist showcases.
American Sign Language teacher Karie Smart believes a good way to celebrate is supporting Deaf business owners, attending events and educating yourself on Deaf culture.
“The reason we celebrate International Day of the Deaf is so that we can spread awareness of the deaf community and encourage others to learn sign language.” Smart said. “It is also used to dispel myths about Deaf people and explain more about deaf culture. Deaf people don’t celebrate like we do most holidays, but in the month of September (Deaf Awareness Month), you will see more deaf people posting on social media in an attempt to educate hearing people!”
