Where The Crawdads Sing is a novel written by Delia Owens. The book was written in a third person point of view, where the readers can see into the characters’ minds. The novel primarily focuses on Kya, a young girl abandoned by her abusive family, and her life living alone in the marsh.

This New York Times Bestseller was adapted into a movie this year. The recently released film is very similar to the book, with only minor details changed. The book is set in a small, fictional town in North Carolina but the movie was filmed in New Orleans. The setting plays an important role in Kya’s early childhood and helps shape her to be the independent and creative young woman portrayed in the movie.

I read the book first, right before I watched the movie. I enjoyed creating images and scenes in my mind while reading and then being able to watch them come to life during the movie. The setting was vividly described in the book, but the movie created a different atmosphere surrounding the setting and scenery.

The biggest difference that I noticed between the book and movie was the way Kya dressed. In the book, she was described to be wearing rags and the same clothes everyday. In the movie, Kya was always well dressed, never repeating an outfit. Overall, the Where The Crawdads Sing movie was very similar to the well-known book. Kya’s story was told in the same flashback style and revolved around the same people. Kya was portrayed as a self-sufficient, smart and intuitive person, just like she was in the book.
