Parking stickers are sold by the school to grant access to the student parking lot at school. Without one, students are not allowed to park on campus and lose access to benefits like having passes to leave early during finals.
The safety of students may be at jeopardy with the use of these stickers. Since they aren’t supposed to be taken off regularly, their cars now show that they are students and what exact school they go to. This can potentially make the student a target for harassment, abduction or stalking in off-campus areas.
If a student drives regularly to the place that they work or like to hang out, a person might see the sticker and begin to memorise the students routine such as their school and work schedule or where they like to spend time on the weekends. This makes it easier for them to know when the student is most vulnerable like when they are alone.
According to The Zebra, an insurance advising company, 82% of people road rage, and in the past seven years there have been over 12,000 people have been injured due to road rage. Students being the least experienced drivers means they are akin to more driving mistakes which can trigger acts of road rage from other drivers. Stickers make a car more recognizable and makes students more susceptible to being targeted on the road.
Although parking stickers are a mainly hypothetical threat to students, it is important to recognize the actual threats they may propose to students.
A hanger parking pass on the mirror would be a more safe option for students. They have the choice to take it off in off-campus public places and put it back on when parking at the school. If not turned in or lost it would be added to the obligation lists for students. They are also reusable and can be turned in at the end of the school year and bought again when the new year comes around. The risk of student safety off-campus would be minimized with this small step.
