Wrestlers Fight Their Way to Regionals
This past weekend, the wrestling team competed in their first UIL District Tournament against 11 other school.
Three wrestlers qualified for Regionals in San Antonio. Sophomore CJ Hernandez, junior Matthew Kelly, and junior Megan Hyder placed fourth place in their classes to advance to post-district competition.
Other wrestlers to place include: freshman Luke Guajardo, fifth; freshman Holly Hammett, fif; junior James Yonker, sixth; junior Jose Hernandez, sixth, freshman Jason Chu, sixth; and junior Matthew Khuong, sixth.
“The tournament was really long, but it was still fun,” Hammett said.
The freshman wrestlers fit in well with the rest of the team.
“I like being involved and being a part of the team,” Guajardo said. “The workouts keep me in shape and out of trouble.”
The freshmen seem to be enjoying their first year as Maverick wrestlers.
“I like wrestling because it’s fun and I’ve made a lot of friends,” Hammett said.
