The K-pop industry has a new group derived from the biggest label in Korea, HYBE. HYBE is known for being behind the biggest Korean global groups like BTS, Tomorrow X Together (TXT), and Katseye. And now they’re announcing their next big global group, CORTIS. Cortis is HYBE’s first boy band debut, taking the mantle of the next big HYBE boy band since BTS. In six years, the five-member, all-teenage group has shown lots of progression and fit into the fourth generation of kpop pretty well.
The K-pop industry has introduced a new group to their media empire, CORTIS, led by Korea’s biggest label HYBE. HYBE is known for being behind the biggest Korean global groups like BTS, Tomorrow X Together (TXT), and Katseye. And now they’re announcing their next big global group, CORTIS. The group’s name originated from an acronym derived from the phrase “Color Outside the Lines.” The group set out to defy the current K-pop industry standards, experimenting with a completely new musical style. Rather than sticking to a single genre, CORTIS’ music blends multiple genres, such as early American hip-hop, trap, pop, rock and smooth jazz.
Unlike traditional idol groups that rely strictly on in-house agency producers, CORTIS brands themselves as a “young creator crew.” The five members, Martin, James, Juhoon, Sunghyun (Seonghyeon), and Gunho (Keonho) are entirely hands-on; directing their music videos and choreography, writing lyrics and composing tracks.
The global anticipation for the group was evident before they began producing and making music. Within just six days of opening their official social media channels, CORTIS amassed over 1 million followers. To commemorate their official debut, the group took the unprecedented step of launching dual global promotions. They split physical pre-release events between Seoul and Los Angeles—where the members spent three months meticulously recording and preparing for their rollout. Led by Korean-Canadian member Martin, CORTIS makes history as the first HYBE group to feature a foreign passport holder as the official team leader. The lineup is completed by James who’s actually from Hong Kong, China, rather than Korea, and Korean members Juhoon, Sunghyun, and Gunho.
Their marketing strategy paid off instantly. Upon releasing their debut single “What You Want” and their self-titled debut EP, Color Outside the Lines, they broke the internet. The EP sold a staggering 247,295 copies on its first day, marking the highest first-day sales for any debuting K-pop group in recent months. The debut of CORTIS sent waves through the financial market as after their initial teaser drops, the group’s stock price rose by over 6%, strengthening the agency’s confidence that the group will be able to compete with established stadium acts.
