On Friday Sep. 26, the Varsity Football team bounced back from their loss to Round Rock High School in a 56-21 win over the Stony Point Tigers. The winner of the game became clear early with the Mavericks ahead of the Tigers 35-7 at halftime.
The Mavericks win was largely due to various impressive offensive plays over the Tigers, specifically from Senior Quarterback Jaden Sultz, throwing for 238 yards and contributing to four touchdowns on only 17 passes.
“I’d say putting last week behind us was the biggest challenge on Friday because we knew we played really badly against Round Rock and that was something we had to put behind us,” Sultz said. “You know, not worrying about the loss, going to practice, just really focusing on beating Stony Point and not worrying about that.”
Starting off the game the Tigers’ had the ball at their own 23 yard line and the Mavericks kept them there, with the Tigers punting the ball to the Mavericks on fourth down from their own 18 yard line. With 10 minutes remaining in the first quarter the defence did not allow the Tigers to make it into the end-zone, ending the first quarter 14-0. The defence remained strong, giving up one touchdown in the second quarter, with the Mavs walking into halftime with a strong 35-7 lead.
“We kept fighting, this is the best defensive game we’ve had all year,” Senior Calvin Cervini said. “So, it was really helping, all the practice drills we were doing this past week were just showing up in the game, and we were just treating it as practice.”
The second half remained just as smooth for the Mavericks who didn’t let up any touchdowns, ending the 3rd quarter 42-7. This lead seemingly ended the matchup with the Mavericks bringing home an impressive win in the fourth quarter.
“I think we bounced back really well, and I think it definitely gave us a lot of confidence going up into playing Vandergrift,” Sultz said. “Obviously they’re the defending state champs, and it’ll be a tough team to play.”
This win leaves the Mavericks with a 2-1 district record and ranked 5th. The Mavericks will return to the field this week on Friday Oct. 3 away against Vandegrift at the Ed W. Memorial Stadium.
