The varsity football team beat the Vandegrift Vipers, 17-14, on Oct. 3 for their first win against the Vipers in program history.
The game was tied 14-14 in the fourth quarter until senior kicker Bryce Wilson got a 48-yard field goal, winning them the game.
“It’s an important game, and it’s a good football team,” coach Scott Hermes said. “It’s important for us to win that one to keep our goal at district title alive. More importantly than who we beat, it was an amazing game for us.”
The game wasn’t without its difficulties, as the team needed to replace senior quarterback Jadon Sultz after an injury, replacing him with senior Calvin Cervini.
“I feel really good about him,” Sultz said. “He just got to start playing corner and now he has to come back to QB which I know he hates but it’s just fate telling him to come back. He’s a great QB and he’s going to do big things.”
Despite the mid-game replacement, Cervini helped score a 19-yard touchdown with senior wide receiver Zach Christie.
“Calvin’s been in this position before,” Hermes said. “We’ve been without Jadon for a few games last year and Calvin was able to step in to get the job done and he did Friday night, so we look forward to what he can do.”
In the first half, Sultz scored the first points of the game, making it to the end zone after catching a pass from senior receiver Jarell Gary Jr.
“That’s a play we’ve worked on all week because we knew they were going to play heavy run,” Sultz said. “We put Jarell back at QB and he was able to throw it great to me and I just made a great play to get to the endzone.”
For the past few weeks, practice focused on tackling for the defense, and handling the ball for the offense.
“I think we’ve had a few of our practices have been better than last week’s,” Hermes said. “If we can get some takeaways we can make some big things happen.”
