Last week’s Crumbl Cookie lineup sparked excitement and debate among the staff at McNeil Publications. Each cookie brought something different to the table and we’ve gathered opinions from staff members to see which flavors hit the mark and which ones didn’t.
Tres Leches Cake ft. Lotus Biscoff®
The Tres Leches cake was the most anticipated dessert of the bunch. After tasting, The Tres Leches cake garnered mixed reviews, with many arguing that the consistency doesn’t resemble a cake at all and instead has a pie-like texture, as illustrated by Life and Arts Editor Hannah Bland “The consistency is too soft,” she said. “It’s nothing like a cake at all.”
While others found the mushy texture to be quite off-putting. “I didn’t like it, the texture tweaked me out,” reporter Annie Benson said.
Most of our team observed that the flavor didn’t accurately reflect the advertised flavor of “tres leches” but instead tasted like pumpkin. “It tastes just like a pumpkin spice latte,” Sports Editor Harper Poore said.
It was even mistakenly referred to as the flavor “pumpkin” during the tasting. “I liked the pumpkin one because it wasn’t like every other cookie.” reporter Giada Stanley said.
Lemon Cake
Average Rating: 8.2/10
Lemon Cake is a crowd-pleaser and a favorite amongst the staff, being praised multiple times because of its explosive flavor and perfect level of sweetness. “My favorite was the Lemon Cake,” Harper said. “It’s light, sweet and delicious, they did a good job with this one.”
The lemon cream cheese frosting is doing the heavy lifting by adding an intricate burst of lemony sweetness. “I think the sourness of the frosting and the sweetness of the batter complement each other really well,” Giada said.
In contrast, Hannah expressed her dislike of the Lemon Cake, and believes Crumbl should stick to their guns,. “I don’t like it,” Hannah said.“Crumbl shouldn’t be making anything but cookies.”
Banoffee Pie
Average Rating: 6.1/10
Before the tasting, our team members believed “Banoffee” was short for “Banana Coffee” and were surprised to find there was no taste of coffee whatsoever. “I was the most excited for the banana coffee one but I was left disappointed,” Giada said. “It didn’t taste like bananas at all, this was my least favorite.”
Banoffee Pie garnered mixed reviews, with some arguing the banana taste was artificial and unpleasant. Harper was quick to express her dislike of the Banoffee Pie, “The whole thing tasted fake,” she said. “The texture is too mushy for my taste but I did enjoy the caramel layer.”
By contrast, Hannah had nothing but good things to say about the pie’s presentation, texture, and overall quality, “It has so much flavor, it blends together and it’s just so beautiful,” she said. “It’s the perfect treat.”
Chocolate Crumb ft. OREO®
Average Rating: 6.2/10
OREO’s status of “the best selling cookie of all time” and universal recognition partnered with Crumbl’s massive social media presence and ever-changing menu has the potential to be the best cookie collaboration in decades. It saddens us to say that Chocolate Crumb didn’t live up to its expectations.
Many argued that the presentation was nice, resembling that of an OREO, but the cookie itself was dry and dense. “Chocolate Crumb looked amazing but the cookie was extremely dense and grainy.” Giada said.
Harper expressed that she enjoyed the cookie but the flavor was too sweet and the cookie itself was too dense.“I like it a lot, it tastes just like an OREO but the cookie is too heavy and too sweet,” Harper said. “I couldn’t have more than one bite.”
