Summer break starts this month and there’s cheap activities to do over the summer. These can range from doing activities at home to going out.
Spending time with friends/family
Hosting a movie night or game board night encourages bonding time with friends or family. It could be as simple as being in the same room as them and having a conversation.
Going on a picnic
There’s many empty fields of grass in Austin to lay out a blanket and have a picnic, one favorite being Zilker Park because of its view of the skyline. Going on a picnic encourages people to go outdoors and breathe in fresh air. It can also encourage people to eat healthy foods – depending on what they bring.
Swimming
Most suburban neighborhoods have a neighborhood pool, however if there isn’t one, Zilker Park has a cheap pool ranging in cost from $2 to $9. Additionally, Barton Springs has a free pool at night for anyone to swim at.
River
If there isn’t a neighborhood pool nearby, visiting the rivers around Texas is also an option. Packing snacks and beverages can add to a fun river trip. At the river there’s canoeing and tubing.
Going on walks
In Bend, Texas, there’s a trail called Spicewood Springs Trail. There’s hiking routes, running trails and nice views of water. If the drive isn’t worth it, there’s nearby trails to walk around neighborhoods and parks.
Volunteering
Volunteering is free anywhere, it is an opportunity to support the community with acts of service. Volunteering hours also look good on college applications, but it’s a good moral act to do anyway.
Thrifting
Thrifting has become a trend this past year amongst students. Goodwill has cheap prices and it’s even cheaper at the Goodwill bins. It can be hard to find cute clothes, but it’s worth it for how cheap it is and helps reduce waste .
Baking
Cookies, cake and brownies are some desserts that are exciting to bake, part of the fun is seeing how well someone can recreate a recipe. Sharing with peers and families can also add to making the special desserts.
Working out
Working out over the three months of break can make someone more active and fit. Working out helps muscles and bones become stronger. At Clay Madsen, it costs $5 to get in for the first time and then $1 every visit. It’s cheaper than a membership because on the days a person isn’t attending, they don’t have to pay.
Local Library
At the Austin Public Library, Austin residents get in for free. This is a good opportunity for people who like to read because it offers a free alternative rather than purchasing a book. There are also movies and music that are available to check out.
