Many students are taking up jobs as referees for local soccer games, drawn in by the flexibility, fulfillment, and good pay offered by clubs such as Town & Country and Lonestar. One student with firsthand experience in this field is junior Israel Garcia, who has been refereeing games for over a year. Garcia describes it as a rewarding job that combines passion for the sport with a way to earn substantial income.
Becoming a soccer referee requires completing a certification course, which includes both online and in-person components. The course ensures referees have a solid understanding of the game’s rules and provides guidance on handling various situations that may arise on the field.
“The course is pretty straightforward,” Garcia said. “It costs around $50 to $100, depending on where you take it, but once you finish, you can start applying for jobs at different organizations. It’s a simple process, and clubs are always looking for new referees.”
Garcia said that refereeing is an accessible way for students to earn money while staying connected to soccer.
“It’s definitely a great job for students,” he said. “Referees usually earn between $15 and $50 per game, depending on the level of the match and the club. For a part-time job, the pay is really solid. You can work just a few games on the weekend and still make a decent amount of money.”
The schedule is another appealing aspect for high school students balancing academics and extracurricular activities. According to Garcia, clubs typically allow referees to set their availability in advance, giving them control over how much they work.
“It’s nice to have a job that doesn’t interfere with school,” Garcia said. “I can ref two or three games in one day and still have time for homework. The flexibility is perfect for students with busy schedules.”
Garcia also noted the sense of fulfillment refereeing provides, beyond just the financial benefits.
“You’re helping out local teams, staying active in the soccer community, and learning valuable skills,” he said. “For anyone who loves the sport, reffing is a win-win. It’s one of the best ways to stay involved while earning money.”
