The CTE National Technical Honor Society is joining the school this year to recognize students performing well in CTE programs. Sophomore Archita Dudella started the society to provide students with opportunities for scholarships and volunteering.
“I know that we have a lot of honor societies at McNeil right now,” Dudella said. “I thought that our great CTE program would be really cool to add in a program for our CTE students. [It’s] an honor society to provide students opportunities at our school to better our community and society. ”
In order to join the society, students must have an unweighted minimum GPA of 3.0, be currently enrolled in a CTE class and have a CTE teacher recommendation. The sponsor of the CTE National Technical Honor Society is biology and PLTW Medical Interventions teacher Shannon Patrick.
“I approached Patrick,” Dudella said. “She was my biology teacher when I was a freshman, she is also a CTE teacher. I thought that she [would be] really open and friendly to approach, so I thought she would be a great sponsor for this club”
The four core objectives of the CTE National Technical Honor Society are career development, leadership, service and recognition opportunities. Being in the society gives students another opportunity to receive scholarships.
“I felt honored that out of all the teachers she could’ve asked, she asked me,” Patrick said. “I thought it was an interesting organization. I wanted to contribute some to the campus, something to be there past me. This is my first year teaching CTE, so [the society] was another way for me to learn more about CTE.”
Applications for the society were due on Feb. 18. The induction ceremony, informing students of how the society will run, will be in late March. Officer elections will be in early April, and the first official meeting will be around mid April.
“I definitely felt accomplished and happy that it was something that could happen,” Dudella said. “It was something I was working towards last year as well, I’m excited that a lot of students at McNeil are interested in it. We are receiving applications right now, I’m just happy that this is something that could happen.”
