The 2022 Academy Awards took place March 27 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. From directors to musicians, many celebrities were in attendance. Despite the main purpose of the award ceremony, the fashion displayed on the event’s red carpet was also eye-catching. Below is a list of the best and worst looks at the 2022 Academy Awards.

Best:

  1. Lily James (Versace)

James was by far the best dressed at the Oscars this year. She wore a pale pink gown with lace details and a tulle train. The effect made her look like an otherworldly being, such as  a mermaid or goddess. The color of the dress complimented her skin tone and the matching accessories were a beautiful addition that only added to the gorgeous look. Overall, James looked absolutely stunning.

      2.  Amy Forsyth (Marchesa)

Forsyth’s gown was bright red and layered. The layering combined with the artistic bunching of the fabric along her shoulder and waist made Forsyth look like a flower. The shape of the dress was simple, but the floral fabric sections made the dress look one of a kind. Forsyth looked beautiful and sweet with a hairstyle that mirrored the style of the dress, and a bold red lip to match.

     3. Timothèe Chalamet (Louis Vuitton)

Chalamet was at the Oscars because Dune, the film he starred in, was nominated for many awards. Dune won in the categories of Cinematography, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Production Design, Sound and Visual Effects. On the red carpet he sported a glittery jacket with fitted pants, and chose to go shirtless under the jacket. His look was eye-catching and the jewelry accents were a nice touch.

     4. Zendaya (Valentino)

Zendaya was at the Oscars to support Dune, a film she was in. Dune won in the categories of Cinematography, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Production Design, Sound and Visual Effects. Zendaya’s outfit was beautiful. The cropped dress shirt and highwaisted skirt complimented her figure and made her look taller. The skirt was beautiful and long, with silver sequins adorning it. Along with sparkly silver jewelry, Zendaya’s look was gorgeous.

     5. Sofia Carson (Giambattista Valli)

Carson wore a beautiful tulle ball gown. The style of the dress’s bodice was unique, with fabric wrapping around the side of her shoulder and chest. The dress contrasted with her neutral colored makeup, while simultaneously matching her sleek dark hair. The look was elegant yet interesting and made for a stunning red carpet look.

     6. Megan Thee Stallion (Gurav Gupta)

Stallion wore an interesting blue dress with shimmery detailing and a ruffled train. The dress almost fit into the category of mermaid-style, but the interesting train made it a new style all together. The cutouts and slit of the dress fit into Stallion’s personal style while keeping it classier for the black-tie event.

     7. Jill Scott

Scott wore a sparkly, black, skin tight dress complete with shoulder pads. It also had flowy sleeves and strips of fabric along the neckline, creating interesting cut outs. The overall look was a mixture of styles, combining the shoulder pad look of the 80s with the flowy sleeves of the 70s to create a distinctive new look. The dress suited Scott’s figure and the shape of the dress gave her a powerful air.

     8. Kristen Stewart (Chanel)

Stewart wore a suit jacket with a dress shirt and shorts. The look was slightly androgenous and very classy. The jewelry and heels added to the style and emphasized Stewart’s personality. Her hair and makeup also accentuated the outfit.

     9. Scott Evans

Evans wore a sky blue tuxedo with a bow tie. The suit had dark blue stripes down each pant leg and had a medium blue fabric around the chest. The overall effect was simple yet interesting, and definitely stepped up from most of the other men’s outfits on the red carpet. While Evans still wore a suit, at least it was different and special.

     10. Andrew Garfield (Saint Laurent)

Garfield sported a suit with a velvety maroon jacket and western style bow tie. The suit was classic but stylish and Garfield wore it well. The suit was just slightly more interesting than a typical suit, but he still deserves praise for trying to think outside the box.

Worst:

  1. Lupita Nyong’o (Prada)

Nyong’o’s gold dress was extremely out there, to say the least. It was a flashy eyesore that didn’t even fit Nyong’o very well. The golden fringe pieces made her look like an expensive piñata, and the oddly placed flowers only added to the weirdness of the outfit. Overall, Nyong’o’s tacky dress missed the mark on a fashionable red carpet look.

     2. Renate Reinsve (Louis Vuitton)

Reinsve’s dress was a strange collection of fabric pieces sewn together. The overall look resembles the torn up remains of a pirate’s uniform. While some aspects of the dress stand out in a good way, like the intricate detailing and embroidery, most of the dress looks overly distressed and trashy. Plus, the bunched up fabric along the neckline looks like human skin. Reinsve’s appearance was strange, eccentric and vaguely unsettling.

     3. Diana Warren

Warren wore a bright green suit with a semi-sheer undershirt and a boom box purse. The suit could have been a stylish choice if the main color of it wasn’t atrocious. The bright green washed Warren out and made spectators want to look away. While her outfit was terrible, she did pin a blue ribbon to her lapel in support of Ukraine in recent political controversy. The political statement was nice, but the outfit was horrific.

     4. Maggie Gyllenhaal (Schiaparelli)

Gyllenhaal’s dress is very intense. The shape of it resembles the letter T and the gold buttons only added to the absurd dress. The buttons were all differently shaped and followed the shape of the dress, emphasizing its odd shape. Overall, Gyllenhaal looks like a very blocky figure.

     5. Tracee Ellis Ross (Carolina Herrera)

Ross’s dress made her resemble a lobster. The absurd shape combined a ball gown skirt with a tight, sleeveless bodice. However, the bodice looked very unsupportive and uncomfortable. Though the color was flattering on Ross, the dress itself was horrendous.

     6. Eva Von Bahr

Bahr wore an actual masterpiece, but it did not have a good result. The dress was printed with a renaissance painting, an interesting choice to say the least. It was an unflattering color for Bahr, and looked too big for her. Additionally, the dress was paired with a purse shaped like a marble bust, only adding to the absurdity.

     7. Kirsten Dunst (Christian Lacroix)

Dunst wore a dress with a flattering color, but the way the fabric is bunched makes her look like a brain. The dress could have been pretty if the fabric smoothed out at Dunst’s waist to make a nice skirt, but instead she resembles a human organ. Additionally, due to the way the extra tulle lays against the dress, the shape doesn’t suit Dunst and makes the dress look too big for her.

     8. Becky G (Etro)

Though G’s dress seems quite normal at first glance, a second look reveals the strange lumps on the sides of G’s waist. Without these weird additions, the dress would have been perfectly lovely. Unfortunately the stylist decided to sew some embroidered pockets onto the gown. Normally, pockets would be great, but by embellishing them, they stand out and make G look like she has lumps on her hips.

     9. Jamie Lee Curtis (Stella McCartney)

Curtis wore a shapeless, navy blue dress with mesh over her hands and a turtleneck bodice. The dress is miraculous and strange looking on Curtis. The gown is pretty ugly overall, but at least there aren’t any atrocious additions to make it worse.

     10. Zuri Hall

Hall’s dress could have been beautiful, but the way the fabric was laid made it look discolored in certain lighting. The shape of the dress was pretty, but the stained spots are distracting from the overall beauty of the gown. The color suits Hall, and her hairstyle and makeup accentuate it nicely, but the dress itself looks strangely bleached in some places.
