In one of the best seasons for Maverick tennis, the team has qualified for the regional tournament after placing second in the district.
After only losing to Westwood in district play, the team received the second seed in the district tournament and the right to play the semifinal match on home courts.
Cedar Ridge won their first round against Round Rock, resulting in a rematch for the Mavs.
The match began with doubles, and impressive play by the boys’ doubles teams and mixed doubles team led to 4-3 lead.
Singles began and the Maverick boys dominated their matches quickly, increasing the lead to 8-3.
A determined Cedar Ridge team fought back, as their girls won five straight matches. A strong performance by Cedar Ridge’s top male player gave them another win, giving them a 9-8 lead. Despite tough matches for the Maverick girls, senior Dallas Sareerat came up in the clutch with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 win at the number two girls match.
With the match count at 9-9, junior Alex Minca sealed the district final appearance for Mavs after a solid singles performance.
In the district finals, the Mavs fought hard but came up short to the state-ranked Warriors with a 10-0 loss.
On the same night as the finals, Cedar Ridge beat Pflugerville 10-5 to secure third place and granting McNeil a regional appearance.
Maverick Tennis will be traveling to Tyler, TX on October 25 to compete in the regional tournament.
