Georgetown High School hosted its annual tournament Jan. 25 for all of the local 3A, 4A and 5A teams that perform well in the Central Texas area. Hot off of their regional appearance and tournament win in Pflugerville last November, the Mavs tried to keep the momentum for the first tournament of the spring season.
“There were a lot of tough teams this time around, but overall I’m proud of how everyone did,” coach Jay Krishnan said.
With senior Sarang Bhadsavle absent with a back injury, freshman Jack Cohen took over the “A” Boys Singles division for McNeil. After a tough first round loss to Cedar Park, Cohen cruised on to win the consolation bracket.
Doubles pair senior Brandon Minns and junior Alex Minca had an impressive showing in the “A” draw after winning their first two rounds, eventually losing to an accomplished team from state-ranked Vandegrift. One of their wins included a nail-biting win over a state-ranked Westwood doubles team.
“That match was crazy,” Minns said. “We did way better than I expected, especially after a rough start in the match.”
Senior mixed doubles team Jared Hahne and Marielle Catalos lost in three sets to a competitive Belton team in the first round. The pair went on to cruise through the consolation bracket, beating Ellison to secure the win.
Other impressive results included first round wins from the doubles team of senior Cindy Wu and sophomore Julie Pham, and junior Masha Aseeva.
The Mavs headed to Pflugerville again to defend their team title on Feb. 1.
