Baseball pastime brings many superstitions especially in high school baseball playoffs. Many area baseball teams have sayings or mottoes they use for playoffs. The Mavs’ motto this year is “BK2BK” – Back To Back – as they look for a repeat of their playoff run last year.
A week after Lake Travis Head Coach Roy Kinnan announced his retirement, the Maverick baseball team looked to end Lake Travis’ season with a playoff win.
In game one of the three game series, Maverick senior Matt Tobolka silenced the Cavaliers’ bats with seven strikeouts and only two hits. The Mavs made the most of six hits, but it was the four Lake Travis errors and a senior Sean Mason RBI single that sent the Mavs home in winning style 3-0.
The Mavs traveled to Lake Travis High School Friday night as the Cavaliers looked to keep their coaches season alive with a win. Senior Kyle Dutton toed the mound for the Mavs in this matchup and had a bunch of help from his offense.
The Mavs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third with an Alex Grant single that scored Max Adler and Tim Hunter. The boys would tack on three more runs in the fourth to make their lead 6-0. Lake Travis came bouncing back in the fourth tacking on four runs off of Dutton to cut the lead to 6-4. Going into the top of the sixth the Mavs led 8-7.
Steven Decarlo came into relieve Dutton in the sixth inning and shut down the Lake Travis bats to secure a 8-7 win for the Mavs and put an end to the Cavaliers’ season.
“The feeling that you get after a win like that is incredible, it’s indescribable,” senior Austin Hinkle said.
The Mavs will take on Kingwood in the second round of playoffs.
