District Games Change Pace for Lady Mavs
With the incredible wins that the Lady Mavs brought home in November, it is no surprise that they continued their stellar performance with the approach of winter break.
In the short time from Nov. 22 to Dec. 5 alone, they won against Smithville with an astounding score of 80-32 and Brentwood Christian by a score of 67-33.
They then opened their district on a high note, beating Hendrickson 75-65. They continued winning over non-district opponents Cypress Springs (64-24) and Dawson (74-53).
However, after experiencing a season that was almost too good to be true, the Lady Mavs finally hit a stumbling block, experiencing a series of three losses between Dec. 6 and Dec. 10 that were the first of the season. The opponents in question were Dekaney, Fort Bend Bush and Cedar Ridge, who beat the McNeil Lady Mavs with scores of 41-71, 41-63 and 52-75 respectively.
Although the losses were an emotional hit for the team, they kept confident that they would continue the rest of the season performing just as well as they had been. And although the Lady Mavs had a shaky start to their winter break series of games, experiencing a close loss to Stony Point by a score of 69-79, they rapidly picked up the pace. On Dec. 27, they emerged from a four game losing streak with a spectacular game against LBJ Austin, in which they scored quarterly points of 28-11, 28-9, 20-8 and 14-14 for a 90-42 win.
That game seemed to have put the Lady Mavs back on track, who then went on to score victories against both Del Valle and Rouse with scores of 62-55 and 60-55.
They then went through another rough patch of losses. The game against Hendrickson was an especially close one. The girls started out shaky, ending the first quarter 10-23, but pulled through the next two quarters outscoring the Lady Hawks 19-11 and 17-15. However, the last quarter slipped through their fingers resulting in a losing score of 57-63.
The next three games, played against Westwood, Pflugerville and Round Rock, were also losses. Final scores were 49-63, 36-66 and 51-81.
Despite the recent turn of events, however, the talent and vigor of the Lady Mavs continues to spur excitement in their supporters, and fans continue to cheer their girls on, rooting for them to finish up the season as strongly as they entered it.
