Boys’ golf places 2nd in San Antonio, 1st in Victoria

Varsity boys’ golf putted through warm, wet and cold weather during tournaments in San Antonio and Victoria, achieving triumph in both.

“It felt really good because varsity didn’t do well before,” sophomore Diego Courtney said.

At the Republic Golf Club in San Antonio on Nov.14, the Mavs competed against 11 teams, placing second, which opened the season with a renewed trust in their skills.

“It gave us confidence for the competition in College Station which we hadn’t won yet,” Courtney said.

The Mavs also placed in the top 10 individual competitors with senior Devon Pyle placing sixth out of 77 players .

“It was good,” Pyle said. “I personally didn’t believe I did so well.”

Despite the concerns, Pyle and the rest of the varsity placed in the top 10 at the competition in Victoria: Courtney placed fourth, Landry Caver (10) placed fifth, Sam Hosek (11) placed sixth, Pyle placed seventh, Ben Reinhardt (10) placed ninth, and Jack Fretwell (10) placed 10th.

Varsity took first place in Victoria against 11 competing teams, winning by 25 shots, a large margin despite the fast greens (the area of the course where the hole and flagstick is located) and the wet weather. The two wins give the Mavs hope for a good season this year.

Varsity will next compete in the elite A&M Invitational Jan. 16-17.
