With the first quarter of the season completed, Week three of the college football season offered lots of excitement and speculation. From Colorado beating Colorado State in a game that had lots of trash talk and anticipation all week, from many top teams struggling with obviously inferior opponents, week three had no shortage of excitement.
Starting in Boulder, Colorado and Colorado State battled in a fantastic rivalry game. The two sides had trash-talked each other all week, specifically, the coaches becoming upset with each other, and the game reflected that, with Heisman hopeful and two-way sensation Travis Hunter being hit when he wasn’t looking, resulting in him having to be transported to the hospital. Without Hunter, the Buffalo’s offense took a hit, being down in the fourth quarter, but quarterback Sheuder Sanders, in his own words, channeled his inner Tom Brady, leading his offense down the field for a touchdown with seconds left on the clock, forcing the game into overtime, where Colorado would win 43-35, improving to a 3-0 record for the season.
While Colorado picked up a huge win, other top teams struggled to win games that shouldn’t have been close. Starting at the top, Georgia trailed South Carolina for a large part of the game, taking their first lead in the third quarter. The Bulldogs are 3-0, but it hasn’t been as dominant as it should’ve been up to this point. Moving down to No. 3, Florida State also trailed, being down to Boston College 10-3. In the second half, it looked like the Seminoles were going to run away with a win, but the Golden Eagles had other plans, putting Florida State on upset alert. The game would end in a 31-29 win for Florida State, but they’re going to have to play better next week against Clemson to stay undefeated. Texas also struggled with Wyoming, with the game being tied in the fourth quarter at 10-10. Texas would dominate the last 15 minutes, outsourcing Wyoming 21-0, but not the showing a college football playoff hopeful would hope to have against a clearly worse opponent. But the worst struggle of the week goes to Alabama, who after coming off their loss to Texas at home, had trouble with South Florida, trailing 3-0 for a while, before winning 17-3. Alabama is going to have to figure things out if they even want to make a relevant bowl game. The playoffs are basically done for the Crimson Tide, but they can still salvage the season.
While some teams struggled, others dominated in week three. Among them were Notre Dame and Ohio State who both figured some things out before their heavyweight matchup against each other in week four. Michigan and Penn State also handled their opponents, remaining undefeated, while LSU dominated Mississippi State 41-14. Oklahoma, UCLA and Washington also crushed their week three enemies and will look to keep the momentum going as the calendar gets closer to October and conference play begins.
With games that will help decide the fate of the season, the season has already been a great one, but it’s only going to get better. The big games are on their way, and with the last year before college football changes forever, everyone is fighting for their share of the season.
