On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the varsity volleyball team matched up Cedar Ridge high school, at Cedar Ridge, losing 0-3. Despite a rough first two sets the Lady Mavs played a close third set, ultimately falling short and losing 19-25. Senior TInley Schoss led the team defensively with 15 serve receptions and senior Kristen Bruce led offensively with 9 digs.
The first set started off slow with both teams holding up rallies and excellent plays. But once Cedar Ridge got their lead the Lady Mavs were not able to catch back up, quickly ending the set 12-25. The same energy was carried over to the second set, and Cedar Ridge’s abundance of digs and successful kills ultimately caused another set loss for the Mavericks, with a final score of 10-25.
“The first set definitely wasn’t the best,” Stewart said. “I feel like we had not warmed up as much as we should’ve and that led us to not playing to our full potential, causing us to not play very well in the second set.”
Starting the third set on a completely different note, the Lady Mavs held the lead for the first few plays. With some undefendable kills from senior Nina Salas and some great plays made by Parker, the Mavs were able to keep up with Cedar Ridge’s aggressive hits. Near the end of the third set, the score remained just a two-point deference, but a controversial call made by one of the line judges ended in a point for Cedar Ridge, who directly after got on a multiple-point streak. The Lady Mavs ended up losing the third and final set 19-25.
“There’s definitely room for improvement,” Stewart said. “We had some great plays and kills, but I just wish that we communicated more and played better as a team, but I think we did pretty good.”
The Lady Mavs will take the court again at home on Tuesday, Oct. 10, where they will once again face the Manor Mustangs.
