The Freshman Girls’ basketball game against Vista Ridge was neck and neck the whole time. After losing by 30 to Vista the first time, the Mavs walked into Friday’s game fired up, keeping the game close till the end. Struggling with players able to play led the game to be three vs five in the third quarter.
“We had six players because I am injured and so is another player,” freshman Layla Balfour said. “Plus two of our players fouled out”.
Coming out of halftime with two starters already fouled out and only four on the court, the Mavs continued to play hard. Throughout the third quarter, the score remained close, with the Mavs’ intense level of gameplay and aggressive defense making it hard for Vista Ridge to be able to score. With four more minutes left in the third quarter, another starter got injured leaving the game three vs five, requiring injured freshman Layla Balfour to step up and play through her injury in the fourth quarter.
“One of the things that made me want to go back into the game was I could see that my team needed me. Everyone was asking me if I could go in, and I just thought I could try,” Balfour said.
Despite difficult circumstances, the Lady Mavs’ continued to play hard in the fourth quarter.
Eventually being able to get five players out on the court again, with another injured player hopping back into action. Shortly after another player fouled out which made the game once again four vs five. Playing until the end, the Mavs were able to end the game 43-47.
