McNeil wrapped up their series against the Vandegrift Vipers Friday night with another loss in a similar fashion. Once again, the pitching was good, but the offense couldn’t give any run support. Senior pitcher Nathanael Schraeder continued his excellent season, but it was a loss nonetheless.
After a scoreless top half of the first, Vandegrift grabbed the bats and got to hitting. Despite the good pitching, Vandy used well-placed ground balls and bloop singles to get baserunners on and in. They got a few consecutive hits, aided by some errant Mav throws, to score three runs in the first inning. That would be the only runs they would score all game, as the bats would go quiet after that. The only real chance the Mavs had at scoring came in the fifth inning as senior CJ Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1, but that would be it, as the Mavs would lose 3-1, getting swept by the Vipers.
Now sitting at 2-5 L, the Mavs’ remaining games are against teams in similar places in the standings. The Mavs play Westwood next, who is also sitting at 2-5 L. The next three weeks are going to decide whether this season ends in disappointment, or if McNeil has another team make playoffs this year.
