The Mavs finished up their series with Westwood on Friday night. Despite scoring five runs, the most in a district game all season, the Mavs allowed 12, eventually losing the game and falling to 2-7 on the season and seventh place in the district.
The game didn’t start well, as Westwood took a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning before McNeil could even come to the plate. The Mavs got one back a few innings later, but before long Westwood had a 9-1 lead in the middle innings. The Mav bats, however, woke up for the first time this season. A few well-placed hits and hard-hit balls led to the Mavs scoring four runs in one inning, putting them right back in the game, 9-5. However, it didn’t get any better than that. The strong suit all year had been the defense, but when it mattered most, McNeil gave up three more runs, making the score 12-5, and crushing any hope of a victory.
With the Mavs now sitting at 2-7, the chances at the playoffs look bleak. They need to win every other game they play this season, which is two against Round Rock, two against Stony Point and one against Cedar Ridge. They also need help, as they need Round Rock to lose every other game this season, and for Westwood to lose three out of their last five. With the chances low and out of control for McNeil, the best we can hope for is to go out on a win.
