Friday, Apr.l 19 was Senior Night for McNeil Baseball as they hosted the Stony Point Tigers. During the game, however, some of the magic might have transferred over. McNeil had to fight for it, but ended up picking up the first win since Mar. 13 against Manor.
In his last start of high school, senior pitcher Nathanael Schraeder started his game with a scoreless first inning, despite allowing a baserunner to get to first. In the bottom of the inning, the Mav bats took an early lead. Junior Joseph Sandusky hit a ground ball to short that was mishandled, allowing him to get on first. Sandusky stole second, before a slow ground ball to the first baseman allowed him to get to third with one out. Senior Pierce Stone came up and had a base hit up the middle to score Sandusky and give the Mavs a 1-0 lead. However, the lead didn’t last long, as in the top of the second, Stony Point had runners on first and second when a base hit to left field scored a run to tie the game 1-1. That score held until the bottom of the fourth when sophomore catcher Micah Goodin came up with the bases loaded and two outs, where he hit a line drive to shallow center field. The fielder dove for the ball, but missed, allowing the Mavs to score two runs on the play and take a 3-1 lead. Schraeder was locked in, as he had one of his best performances of the year, shutting down the Tigers bats and securing the 3-1 win for the Mavs on Senior Night.
With one game to go, the Mavs will look to recreate the magic they discovered one last time. They’ll go against the third-place Cedar Ridge Raiders on Tuesday night and hope to go out on top.
