On Tuesday, Aug. 20, Varsity Volleyball faced Chaparral on the Lady Mavs home court. Kicking off the season with their first official game, the Lady Mavs played three close sets, ending the game in a 0-3 loss.
Starting the game strong both teams came out to play, with every set remaining close. Ending the first set 18-25, losing by only 7 points. With senior Kira Dagenhart’s consistent hustle for every ball, and junior Chloe Stewarts’ strong serve racking up multiple back-to-back aces for the team, the Lady Mavs were able to keep up with Chaparral, ending the second set just barely behind with an end score of 22-25. Despite the Mavericks’ noticeable effort Chaparral’s hard hits and strong plays, the Lady Mavs could not win the third set, ending the game 23-25, just two points away from a win in the third set.
“Lack of communication definitely contributed to our loss,” Dagenhart said. “as well as lack of energy when we were down, people got in their heads easily and it was hard to get out of that hole, but during previous games when we were under pressure we just went downhill, but this one we fought for every point, and tried our best to win, it helped us realize we are a lot better than we think we are.”
The Lady Mavs will return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 6:30, away at Vandegrift High School.
