Track and field competed in the District 25-6A meet at Round Rock High School on Wednesday and Thursday April 2-3, with 13 athletes advancing to the area meet on Wednesday, April 9.
In order to advance from districts to areas the runner must place in the top four out of all runners in your event from Round Rock ISD, where from there their goal is to move on from Areas and onto the 6A-region meet on April 28-29.
Among the 14 athletes who advanced includes the girls’ 4×200 meter relay team, who junior sprinter Tierra Green credited her relay teams success to their preparation and teamwork.
“To prepare for the meet we’ve been constantly and consistently working on our handoffs to make sure they’re good in order to cut down time,” Green said. “When we found out we placed, and were advancing to the area meet we were all so excited, and all just so glad that we made it.”
For others on the team, despite their season ending at the district meet, the program’s focus continues to support those still competing.
“Although I didn’t advance from my races, I don’t wish to really change anything at all, and I am excited to continue to train and put work in for next year,” junior sprinter Fernando Gonzales said. “I’m now cheering on my teammates, and I hope they succeed and get to where they want to get.”
Strong team chemistry has also played a role in the teams success, especially in relays.
“We always make sure to practice our handoffs the day before the race until we felt completely confident,” senior sprinter Lena Nguyen said. “I’m so lucky to have such a close bond with my relay team, before we take our positions for the relay, we always huddle up for a pep talk, hyping each other up and making sure we are all focused and ready to perform our best.”
With the area meet approaching, the Mavericks are focusing on refining their performance and bringing their best to the track in hope to further advance.
“I’m beyond happy that my hard work and practice has led me to this point,” Nguyen said. “Advancing to areas has me feeling excited to race alongside my fellow seniors Jada and Ellie, as well as our junior Tierra. This might be my last race, but I can proudly say that I’ll be racing with such an incredible team.”
