On Friday, Sept. 19, the Varsity Volleyball team played Cedar Ridge at home, ending in a 0-3 loss.
The Lady Mavs kicked off the first set with a notable block from Kimberly Williams. Early in the game, with the score set 7-8, an injury on the court knocked out Senior Chloe Stuart, causing a momentary setback for the Mavericks. Quickly returning to the court, the Lady Mavs played a close game where Cedar RIdge ultimately gained the upper hand of 7 points, resulting in a final score of 17-25.
“Sometimes [injuries] really get in our heads and affect us points wise, like we’ll have an injury and go down in points.” Senior player Karis Cosby said. “Sometimes though we fight through, like how we did in the next set.”
During the second set, Mavericks were able to tie the game early on with the score setting at 4-4. Cedar Ridge managed to steal the tie immediately after. The Mavericks continued the fight, but were ultimately overtaken by Cedar Ridge, resulting in their 6 point win as the final score closed at 18-25.
“I remind myself there’s nothing you can do on the point that just happened, so focus on the next one,” Sophomore Zoe Torres said. “I like to give [my teammates] lots of high fives and tell them, you’ve got the next one, lift them up and encourage them.”
Starting the third set off strong, the Lady Mavs set the score at 2-0. The fight continued and Cedar Ridge managed to tie the score at 5-5. The Mavericks fought hard and took the score at 6-5, before tying again at 8-8. They continued a close game, tying streak meeting up to 19-19. Significant plays coming from Cedar Ridge managed to end the score at 20-25.
“It’s a team sport so it’s super important to rely on your teammates to uplift you and just work together,” Sophomore Kimberly Williams said. “They are a really good team so I was proud of my team for sticking with them, especially in the third set.”
The Mavericks play their next game this Friday, Sept. 26 at Manor High School.
