The Varsity Volleyball team marked the halfway point of their season in a heated match against Manor Senior High School on Friday, Sep. 26, ending in a big 3-1 win for the Lady Mavs. As their 2025 season begins to come to a close the Lady Mavs reflect over the season.
The Mavericks started their season with a tough stretch, facing strong opponents in various tournaments and non-district matchups. Despite these early setbacks against teams like Lake Belton, Clear Falls, and Georgetown, the team continued to show resilience and determination throughout the season.
“I would say the tournaments were really rough on us, and even though we did win some games, the losses were really hard,” Junior right side Lainey Mican said. “We were all just really exhausted, and when we’re tired and we’re playing tired, we kind of just get mad at each other, but I think it did help us grow, we just had to stick together and we did everything as a team.”
The Lady Mavs first victory came on Tuesday, Aug. 19, with a 3-0 sweep over Manor, giving the team momentum heading into district play. Another highlight came on Friday, Sep. 12, when the Mavericks defeated Taylor in a 3-1 match, bringing home another homecoming victory for the Mavs.
“I feel like just beating down Manor always feels good,” Freshman setter Jaclyn Fowler said. “The Taylor win was really good because it was homecoming, and we’ve never played them before, so we didn’t really know anything about them, it just kind of reminded the whole team that we can win and it’s just not our fault that we’re shorter.”
District competitions proved challenging for the Lady Mavs. Facing powerhouse programs like Vandegrift, Vista Ridge, and Round Rock, who handed the Lady Mavs straight-set losses. Despite this, the Lady Mavs continued to battle, improving their communication and effort each match.
“I feel like it’s gone okay so far, I mean, we’ve played well, but the competition is so good,” Fowler said. “We’ve improved, and next year, it will be difficult because we’re losing I think, five or six people, possibly more players, so I just want to be able to mesh with the team next year as well as we mesh this year.”
While the seasons record does not reflect the Lady Mavs persistence, the program’s foundation continues to grow. With younger players gaining varsity experience and upperclassmen showing noticeable leadership, the Lady Mavs volleyball program is building towards a more competitive future.
