On Friday, Feb. 27, the Mavericks Softball team played against Vista Ridge. The Mavs entered with confidence, but found themselves struggling hard during the fearfully anticipated game. After a tough fight, the Mavericks suffered a 0-17 loss.
“We came in knowing it would be a tough game, we started off strong with confidence, but unfortunately we lost,” Sophomore Elizabeth Martir said. “Moving forward when we face them again, we’ll have a better approach.”
Considering the loss, most teammates are focusing on how they can improve in relation to their upcoming games. Focusing on the positive parts of the overall game, Sophomore London Peterson shared a concept of the team’s takeaway from the loss.
“I think this game was a big learning experience,” Peterson said. “Now we are going to have to adjust to talking more on the field, cheering more in the dugout, and not coming into the game scared, instead coming in ready to play and changing the other team’s perspectives on us.”
Peterson additionally noted the importance of a confident approach, and having good mental preparation prior to a game.
“You can’t control how other people play, only yourself,” said Peterson. “So making sure you have a good mindset and play well is something I always think of.”
Overall, the Mavericks have chosen to look at this game as an opportunity to grow and improve. This game is simply one of many, and does not reflect on the team’s skill as a whole. It is important to stay motivated, says Junior Sydne Jackson.
“Moving forward as a team, we’ve realized we can’t just stop trying once a bad thing happens,” Jackson said. “If we want a different outcome, we need to start finding different solutions.”
The Mavericks next game will be played against Hutto, and will take place on Tuesday, Mar. 3.
