The speech and debate team made a statement at the Heart of Texas National Qualifier, earning five national qualifications and taking home the Speech Sweepstakes award as they punched their tickets to the NSDA National Tournament.
Competing against more than ten schools in a high stakes district tournament where only the top two in each event advance, multiple students secured national bids, highlighting the program’s growth and depth in a competitive field. Junior Nikhil Sridharan qualified in Informative Speaking, earning first place in his event during his first year in speech.
“I qualified in informative speaking. I got first place, and I was really, really shocked to be able to get that,” Sridharan said. “I was really happy because I worked really hard for this.”
With more at stake than a typical invitational, Sridharan said the atmosphere felt different from local competitions.
“This was one of the more difficult tournaments because there was a lot more at stake compared to local tournaments,” Sridharan said. “The atmosphere was definitely a lot more competitive, but it was still a really fun tournament.”
Preparation focused heavily on refining performance rather than content alone.
“The most important skill that I think we needed at this high level of competition was definitely focusing on the delivery of our speech,” Sridharan said. “Everyone has really amazing speeches and really amazing topics, but the difference is in how people perform them.”
Junior Aditri Chakraborty also qualified for NSDA Nationals, placing in both Humorous Interpretation and Informative Speaking.
“I qualified in both of my events, by placing second,” Chakraborty said. “The hard work paid off, and we were able to actually get higher ranks this time.”
For Chakraborty, qualifying carried personal meaning beyond placement.
“My piece kind of explores how it’s okay to accept your cultural identity,” Chakraborty said. “Being able to kind of go to nationals and be able to show my skills and this story, it means a lot to me.”
Both students emphasized the role of team support throughout the weekend. Between rounds, competitors leaned on one another to maintain energy and composure in a pressure-filled environment.
“We’re an amazing crowd,” Chakraborty said. “[To be] able to be a part of it and be able to lead it, it’s something I’m really grateful for.”
Beyond individual achievements, the team’s collective success earned them the Speech Sweepstakes title, awarded to the school with the highest overall speech points at the tournament.
“It went to show that we’re building it up,” Chakraborty said. “All our members are motivated. They’re amazing.”
With nationals ahead and months to refine their pieces, the team now shifts its focus to the biggest stage of the season, carrying momentum from a qualifier that demonstrated both individual excellence and program-wide strength.
