The varsity team rejoices after scoring a point against Anderson. The team won 1 out of 3 games.

The volleyball season has begun, starting off with the Pearland Tournament. All of the girls are starting off the season excited and pumped, winning matches upon matches. At the Pearland Tournament varsity placed bronze.

“How great of a finish that was for our kids,” coach Karen Huffman said.

Playing against 80 of the top teams in the state in 4A/5A (biggest and most highly competitive tourney in Texas) and having more than 100 college recruiters in attendance, the girls felt the pressure.

Besides the pressures of playing nine matches, all the teams were in the playoffs last season. Three of those teams, Clear Falls, S.A. Reagan and Westlake, are ranked out of the top seven state teams. The final game lost was to the 2011 state champions, but the team did win five of the matches.

“These kids are working hard and we’re going to have our bumps in the road this season, but I hope students make the time to come out and support these girls,” Huffman said.  “If we can cultivate the culture of being a competitor and be consistent, this is going to be a fun group to watch develop this season.”

After playing at the Pearland Tournament, junior Sami Frazier was chosen to be on the All- Tournament team. The All-Tournament team is a UIL team selected by the Texas Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Committee.

“Making the All-Tournament team gave me a huge boost of confidence,” Frazier said. “It helped me see my potential as a player.”

Varsity won all three games against Vista Ridge in its season opener. The games were close, 25-20 25-20 25-22, but the Lady Mavs still defeated Vista Ridge.

The girls next played against Lake Travis losing all three games this time, 19-25 21-25 20-25, but will continue to play hard at their next tournament.
